this is totally one of my favorite films. you don't hear enough about it though, unfortunately. it'd be nice to see a decent dvd release (a la the criterion two lane blacktop, which i asscociate with this movie in spirit, and because linda manz looks a little like james taylor), the one that's floating around on netflix and shit is terrible.

anyway, not sure if you check old comments, but if you have any antecodotes about this film, i'd like to hear them...

i saw this movie for the first time sick as a dog winter 2003 in williamsburg vhs tape rental. my friend tracy rented it and i was so blown away by it. not only did the soundtrack in context with the film reveal more about neil young but it really nailed the aging hippy derelict easyrider hangover that surely dennis hopper had to look at in the mirror daily. i remain an ardent critic of gummo, an unabashed fan of days of heaven, but after seeing out of the blue i really got the appeal and need of linda manz

i'm a conflicted supporter of gummo i guess, but you could argue it owes mr. hopper a royalty check after seeing this one. i liked out of the blue so much i revisted colors-- which oddly enough was his directorial follow-up. sober republican hopper can't match it (there is a scene involving damon wayans and a stuffed animal that evokes the days of yore though).

another offbeat, underrated VHS classic of this sort is john huston's wise blood. it's based on the flannery o'connor book (never read her) and stars my favorite character from deadwood, brad dourif (aka the voice of "chucky"!!)... not as good as out of the blue, but of the same spirit, if you haven't seen it.
